Timothy James Walz was born on April 6, 1964, in Mankato, Minnesota. raised in a working-class family, he attended Mankato State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in social studies education and a master's degree in education from the University of South Dakota.

After graduation, Walz worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach. He also served for 24 years in the Army National Guard, rising to the rank of command sergeant major.
